Creating a Reflection Effect - Illustrator

You want to make the illusion of a reflection on your sheriff's badge. Here's How.

Duplicate the object you wish to make a reflection on.

Draw an ellipse over where you wish the reflection effect to be.

Shift click on the ellipse and the other object to select them both. Then select the shape builder tool and click on the sections of the star divided by the ellipse to separate them into different shapes, then alt+click on the ellipse hanging outside of the shape to get rid of it.

Using the Black Arrow tool select the top portion of your shape and give it a slightly lighter shade of the same color as the bottom portion.

Get the main object and duplicate that layer. Then go back to the shape maker tool and drag the layer with the large ellipse in it to the very top of the layers panel.

Select the main object and go to the object menu and click offset path.

To make it offset in an inwards direction, type a negative value into the value box.

Delete whatever copy it may have made from this process.

Select the offset path and get rid of it's stroke.  Shift click on the big ellipse and give them both a dark color.

Go back to the Tool Maker and alt+click the portions of the image you do not want to get rid of them.

With the bottom half of the main shape selected, go to the Effect Menu > Stylize > Inner Glow

Modify the values in the dialogue box to get the desired shining/reflecting effect.

Make sure it's 'multiply' and 'edge' for best results.

Fiddle with opacity and blur until it looks how you want.
