Adventure Quest - The Background Game

Adventure Quest is a game I have been playing for over eight years, the game having been released in early 2002, and I started playing around the age where I learned that girls weren't so icky.

Adventure Quest is a single player online flash-based role-playing game that belongs in the comfortable spot of 'the windowed browser panel behind all the homework panels'. All this game requires is enough attention to click a few times every so often, which makes it perfect for when you are doing something else that is just boring enough to require intermittent distractions.

The maximum level is 150, which I finally accomplished recently and which is why I am making this blog post. This game isn't spectacular in any way, but if I play it for nearly a decade and reached the highest attainable level in the game, then it must be worth mentioning somehow.

Above you can see my character page, which shows my name, title, sub-class, level, stats, clan, subrace, currencies of multiple sorts, my character ID, and last but not least that I am petty enough to have spent $20 on making this character a guardian (their version of a 'membership').

My chosen style of play was a fully defensive beastmaster mage, which is fancy lingo for saying I hide in bulky armor and let my pets and spells do all the work while I cower behind my defenses.

But it works for me, and I will give a description of my character and how it all works in-game.

Being Fully Defensive [FD] means that you will want to get the most defensive armors and shields in the game. You can use the picture above (all the items my character owns) as reference.

TERMS : Defensively Leaned (all damage done, and taken, are multiplied by 80%-90%)

Pre-Lean Defensive (defensive armor that existed before the 'lean' mechanic was introduced)
              BTH (bonus to hit)

Example of Favorite Equipment & Main Strategy

Above is displayed six of my favorite pieces of equipment in the game: the Communicant Armor, the Celtic Wheel Shield, the Luminous Wyrm Helm, the Forgotten's Harrowing Totem, the spell Destruction Burst, and of course Fairy God Mother.

The armor is pre-lean defensive, and has the ability to boost the damage of spells by 50%.

The shield, when clicked, will leach a bit of your SP, but increase your Intelligence by 50 points.
The Helm reduces your light resistence by 9%, and increases your damage the less HP you have.
The spell gets a 50% damage increase and seeks between fire and darkness at the cost of some HP.
The weapon may give your darkness spells a chance to fear the enemy, giving up their turn.
The pet, when clicking on the hand, can either heal your HP or MP, or do a light element attack.

A big advantage of playing full defensive is that you can monitor how much HP and MP you are missing, because your damage taken is so reduced you have all the time in the world. This allows me to make the most of my favorite equipment combinations, as well as take advantage of the way damage is dealt in the game.

The main examples are any of my fully defensive armors, the ones with the percentage leans, while equipped with 100% proc. weapons (weapons that always use their weapon special). In this way you will be taking 80% of the damage of an element, while the weapon ignores the armor lean and does its full 100% damage. In this way you have a 20% damage advantage in certain fights.

Equipment Run-Down

Equipment Sets

Akasha Wand, Wyrm Knight's Hide, Wyrm Knight's Scales - (Location: Mage Shop > Mastercraft Sets > Maze of the Mana Dragon!)
The armor has a 0.9 lean, the shield gets +9 to all defenses when the monster is burnt, and the weapon is a 100% weapon that hits twice and regenerates mana when used

Lyr's Druid, Celtic Wheel, Badb Catha, Coire Dagdae - (Location: Mage Shop > Mastercraft Sets > Celtic Set!)
The armor has a 0.8 lean and a strong SP water spell, the shield can be clicked to give you 50 Int points during battle, the pet can make the monster hurt itself, and the item gives water and magic defense, bonus CHA and heals you slightly each turn when the monster attacks with melee
Horo-Show Void Vigilante, Horo-Show Void Vindicator, Horo-Show Void Visor - (Location: Twilly > Anniversary Events > The Dragon of Time > Bonus)
The armor is pre-lean and has good defenses, the shield damages monsters and heals SP proportionally to the damage, the item gives a 0.5 multiplier to ice and void damage, and when equipped with the amor and shield it gives extra blocking

*a more defensive option would be the ReignDragon Rider armor, which has a 0.8 lean and a SP abiltiy that does fire damage and has a chance to burn
High Communicants' Zeal, High Communicant's Valiance, Lion's Roar - (Location: Travel Map > Travel South > Alnaphar > Click on Rainbow)
The armor is pre-lean defensive and has a chance to boost spell damage by 50%, the shield will shift to cover whatever element and undead enemy attacks with, the weapon is 100% proc and boosts light damage against undead enemies by 25%

*a more defensive shield would be the Cosmic Ethereal Shield (Location:Location: Travel Map > Granemor > General Herous' Tower > 15: Absol-ution Saga » 4: War for Absolution!)
Which gives just as much light resistance, but also has an SP ability to give a change for all enemy attacks to do only 80% damage)

Eternal Twilight's Mantle, Eternal Twilight's Regalia, Forgotten's Harrowing Totem, Eternal Twilight's Harbinger - (Location: Travel Map > Travel South > Alnaphar > Quest for the Twilight Set)
The armor is pre-lean defensive and has a chance to dodge each attack, the shield has a chance of reducing each enemy's attack's BTH (bonus to hit), the weapon is 100% proc and may give darkness spells a change to Fear the enemy, the pet has a chance to Blind the enemy and reduce their accuracy

Other Equipment

Transcendent Mana Staff - (Location: Guardian Tower > Nimrod > Account Shop)
A water weapon that regenerates a small amount of mana with each attack

Healing Branch - (Location: Travel Map > Travel East > Travel South > Haven > Mind if I Explore the Town A Bit? > Medic Cabin > Got Any Quests?)
A water weapon that gives four choices when attacked with: a healing spell, an efficient water spell, a spell that gets rid of statuses and may give HP regeneration, and a the choice to Draw Mana which just regenerates mana and is why I keep it on me

Rock Thrower G - (Location: Harvest Festival Exclusive)
A 100% proc earth weapon that hits three times. A good replacement is the Forest Champion Wand (Location: Twilly > Moglin Forest) Which is a 100% proc weapon that hits two times

Undefeatablade - (Location: Guardian Tower > Armory > Treasury > War Room > Guardian Arena > Final Challenge?)
A 20% proc, dual element weapon covering Ice and Energy. A good replacement selection is the Ultra Omni Knight Blade, which covers Water and Ice (Location: Twilly > Anniversary Events > Rise of the Shadow Council) and Star Screamer which covers Energy (Location: Today's Event > Warpforce Crossover Quests! > WarpWars!)
[so instead of having the Transcendent Mana Staff and the Undefeatablade you would have the Ultra Omni Knight Blade and the Star Screamer]

Gaia Plate - (Location: The Inn > Yulgar > Shopping > Advanced > Armor)
A neutral armor with good Earth defenses

*a more defensive option would be the Vibrant Living Armor, which has a 0.8 lean and heals a small amount of your HP each turn.

Quester's Heavy Gunner - (Location: Today's Event > Warpforce Crossover Quests! > WarpWars!)
An energy armor with a 0.8 lean and two abilities: a damaging energy spell and a forcefield that prevents HP damage at the cost of MP)

Defensive Test Armor - (Location: Ballyhoo and Upgrades > Watch Video > Rare Items Shop > there is a chance that under Armor the Defensive Test Armor will be there)
A wind armor with 0.8 lean

*the Defensive Test Armor is free, but if you can spare the coin, a much better way to play is to get the Fujin set to cover your wind element, and get the Insightful Armor of Awe elementalized to earth to cover the earth element, as it is a defensive armor set as well

Shadow of Doubt & Crystal of Restless Shadow - (Location: Travel Map > Travel East > Travel South > Seekrat > 10: Final Countdown)
Neutral amor that defends against both light and dark elements, and has an ability that follows weapon element and has a chance to Paralyze.
A misc item that gives defense against both light and dark and reduces damage by 0.8, but also heals player by damage dealt*0.25

Tectonic Tower Shield - (Location: Limited Time Items!)
An earth shield that reduces damage taken the less HP you have

High Oracle's Taladosian Ward & High Oracle's Sacragon - (Location: Travel Map > Travel East > Travel Southeast > Taledosian Set)

A spell that seeks between fire and darkness, and gets a 50% damage boost at the cost of some HP

Whirl Tide, Frigid Fury, Gravity Crush, Thunder Wave, Star Forge - (Location: Travel Map > Travel South > Varrinsqu Keep)
Water, Ice, Earth, Energy, and Light spells that are all more accurate than other spells

Biggest Fan - (Location: Guardian Tower > Nimrod > Enthusiast Arena)

A wind spell that has a change to Fear the enemy

Sisters of Mercy - (Location: Limited Time Shop!)
A spell that heals based on your CHA stat, and gives you a 0.5 damage modifier for one turn against all elements. A good substitute would be Waters of Immortality (Location: Travel Map > Granemor > General's Tower > 14: Pool of Eternity)

Floating Pie - (Location: Today's Event > Confectionary Calamity) (will probably be moved to the mage shop mastercraft quests once it leaves Today's Event)
A fire pet that does great damage, and can be clicked to have a chance to Paralyze

Velocigobbler - (Location: Harvest Festival Exclusive)
A strong wind pet, nothing special

Frostbite G - (Location: Harvest Festival Exclusive)
A good ice spell that can have a damage over time effect, as well as increases in strength when the DOE is in effect. Works well with the Wyrm Knight set because the DOE registers as a Burn effect and triggers the shield to boost defenses.

Nerfkitten - (Location: Guardian Tower > Nimrod > Guardian Shop)
An ice pet that can increase its own BTH and damage output, as well as decrease monster's defenses

Azamay Marble Guardian Golem - (Location: Robina's Shop > Quests! > Next > Ruins of Rundlecrum)
An earth pet that can be customized with certain misc items, although I just keep him around because he's cute

*a more defensive choice would be Regal Caeszard (Location: Zard hunter Shop > Other Quests > UnZardly Terror!) which does good damage as well as gives a chance to Daze the enemy.

Fairy Godmother - (Location: Guardian Tower > Nimrod > Guardian Shop)
A light pet that you can click on to change between healing your HP, your MP, or a damaging light attack

Divine Yasakani Jewel - (Location: Travel Map > Sky Bridge)
gives wind resistance and increases both DEX and CHA by 50 during battle, also increases amount healed by healing effects
Clan Defender's Momento - (Location: Travel Map > Chessmaster Saga > 12: Paxian Patrols)
gives earth resistance and defends against immobilizing effects
Guardian Colossal Shock Collar - (Location: Travel Map > Chessmaster Saga > 13: Fallen Fisherman)

Luminous Wyrm Helm - (Loaction: Travel Map > Chessmaster Saga > 11: Return to Paxia!)
gives light resistance and boosts your damage the less HP you have
13th Mask - (Location: Golden Giftbox - Common)
gives darkness resistance and increases BTH

Grindy Bits and other Tips

Some great places to build up cash and exp is Dragonstone, playing the 'Quest for the Dragon Blade!' quest is quite popular. Also, if you get the dragonbane weapon at the end, the Dragon of Time anniversary event's monster's are weak to this weapon, and can be killed in as low as two turns, giving quick gold and exp.

Clicking on the Untrainer's Jaw will make him OHKO you for faster unleveling.

It is best to have at least your Fire, Ice, Light, and Dark elements covered first.

There are many types of builds to play as to suit your preference;
Defensive Ranger, Mage, or Warrior
  • Offensive Ranger, Mage, or Warrior
  • Mid-Defensive Ranger, Mage, or Wairrior
  • Mid-Offensive Ranger, Mage, or Wairrior
  • Fully Defensive Ranger, Mage, or Wairrior
  • Fully Offensive Ranger, Mage, or Wairrior
  • Beastmaster Ranger, Mage, or Wairrior
  • Annihilator Ranger, Mage, or Wairrior
  • An Assortment of Hybrid Builds
All of which have their strengths and weaknesses.

Certain pets require CHA to be active in battle. Either make sure you have enough CHA to use a pet effectively, or use pets that require no CHA.
