Personal Favorite Pokemon: Creating my PVE Team

Pokemon has been around for over 20 years and it's not going to go away any time soon. So why not make a team that should last you a long while, for the games to come?

I've been using this team since generation three (with a few minor changes since black and white) as the crew that I cruise through newer games with.

Here are the details:

ele-mental (Octillery) @ Wise Glasses / Expert Belt
Ability: Suction Cups  / Sniper
EVs: 212 HP / 252 SpA / 44 Spe
Modest Nature
- Energy Ball
- Hydro Pump
- Flamethrower
- Ice Beam

punch-out (Scrafty) @ Fist Plate/Assault Vest
Ability: Moxie
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Thunder Punch
- Knock Off
- Iron Head
- Drain Punch/Zen Headbutt/High Jump Kick

A different moveset to use with Scrafty, for better coverage, is
Drain Punch, Crunch, Ice Punch, Zen Headbutt. Change Fist Plate for Assault Vest for more Special Defense, if you so choose.

fuckle (Shuckle) @ Leftovers
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 204 HP / 52 Def / 252 SpD
Bold Nature
- Sticky Web
- Stealth Rock
- Sludge Bomb/Encore
- String Shot/Rest

Send this little fellow out and have him gum up the battlefield with a Sticky Web, then poor some rocks onto the ground with Stealth Rock...then die; switching into a sweeper afterwards. If you can switch out to your sweeper early, send him back in to String Shot or Encore a problematic Pokemon.

bed time (Jumpluff)
Ability: Infiltrator
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Sleep Powder
- Acrobatics
- Seed Bomb/ Giga Drain
- U-turn

No held item for Jumpluff to boost the power of Acrobatics.

spongegar (Tentacruel) @ Black Sludge
Ability: Liquid Ooze
EVs: 240 HP / 244 SpD / 24 Spe
Bold Nature
- Rapid Spin/Magic Coat
- Scald/Giga Drain/Muddy Water
- Toxic Spikes/Tickle
- Acid Spray/Sludge Bomb/Confuse Ray

More aggressive builds will include Giga Drain and Sludge Bomb. A good utility to keep on Tentacruel is Rapid-Spin and Confuse Ray/Tickle.

poops (Dugtrio) @ Focus Sash
Ability: Arena Trap
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake/Stone Edge
- Reversal/Bulldoze
- Screech/Sand Attack/Aerial Ace
- Memento/Night Slash

For a more aggressive setup, switch Screech and Memento with Aerial Ace (for annoying grass type) and Night Slash (for annoying psychic/ghost types) respectively.

How This Team Works

Shuckle is great for throwing in a sticky web and stealth rock for the tougher fights, and maybe use Encore/String Shot to switch into a sweeper more safely. Sticky web allows Octillery and Scrafty to usually act first in battle, as the enemy's pokemon are severely slowed when switched in. You can switch Infestation for Mud Slap, which will lower a foes accuracy making switch-in's even safer, but I keep it in case of the rare Dark type encounter.

Jumpluff's job is pretty simple, move first and use sleeping powder. It's immune to earthquake, so when a threatening ground-type pokemon shows up put it to sleep and switch into something to take it out.

Octillery is my special sweeper of choice. It has a great move-set, covering grass, ice, fire, and water. That, and it's ability Suction Cups makes it a permanent threat. So give it Wise Glasses and let its coverage do the work. NOTE: If you have a Ninjask and are a fan of Baton Passing into a pokemon that moves at 700mph, this is a good sweeper.

Scrafty is my physical sweeper. It's ability Moxie makes it stronger the more pokemon it takes out, giving it good momentum in battle. That, and it has good coverage as well as the invaluable move Drain Punch, which gives him durability in tricky fights. Since he can learn all the 'Punch' moves, you can switch it to your preference, but I keep it on Thunder Punch because of the lack of electric moves in the overall team.

Tentacruel has been around for a long time, and for good reason. It is water/poison type and has the amazing ability Liquid Ooze. So it is a mid-defensive special wall with immunity to draining moves, which are predominantly grass type. Give it some Black Sludge to hold and it won't die easily in any fight. Make the most use of it by throwing down some Toxic Spikes, clear your side of the field of entry hazards with Rapid Spin, or lower an enemy pokemon's special defense with Acid Spray. It's my favorite utility pokemon for a reason.

Dugtrio is the premier ground type pokemon in my eyes. He has what ground types usually don't, high attack AND speed AND the ability arena trap. So, throw him in while the enemy is stuck in sticky web and earthquake whatever is in there to death with no means of escape. And although Dugtrio is fragile, it is easily fixable with a Focus Sash and the move Reversal; so he gets knocked down to 1% health, his move Reversal becomes a 200 powered fighting move with 100% accuracy. Quite the double threat. Also, use screech and Memento to lower the Defense of pokemon that are tanky and switch into something that can handle it better.

Of course, since it's just playing within the game and not competitively, you will be using more 'give-and-receive' pokemon, i.e. pokemon that can take a hit or two each battle.

so here are some honorable mentions that you can add to your team

Honorable Mentions and Additions

Breloom @ Toxic Orb
Ability: Poison Heal
EVs: 12 HP / 244 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Low Sweep / Spore / Mach Punch / Drain Punch
- Fury Cutter
- Seed Bomb
- Facade

Breloom is a good bruiser, healing from toxic orb and getting a damage boost to its move 'Facade' by being poisoned. It will have a high damage move (Facade) as well as a grass and fighting move, the latter which slows the target, in case it, or a member of its team is faster than Breloom. If you don't mind sacrificing Low Sweep for Spore, a fun strategy to use is send a pokemon to sleep and gain momentum on Fury Cutter - resulting in a 160 power bug type move to sweep with.

Cloyster @ Never-Melt Ice
Ability: Skill Link
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Ice Shard
- Icicle Spear
- Rock Blast
- Shell Smash

Cloyster has amazing physical defense, and the ability Skill Link, which makes its moves that can hit 'up to five times' ALWAYS hit five times. So throw on some multi-hitting moves and blast away like a tank with the power boost of Never-Melt Ice and the defense shredding ability Razor Shell.

Hitmonchan @ Assault Vest
Ability: Iron Fist
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Drain Punch
- Fire Punch
- Ice Punch
- Thunder Punch

Hitmonchan is fighting type, but has pretty good coverage and a good attack stat. But what makes him a threat is his ability Iron Fist, which increases the power of punching moves by 20%. So throw Thunder Punch, Fire Punch, Ice Punch, and Drain Punch on him and you've got three 90 power moves (Thunder, Fire, Ice) and a ~130 damage move (drain punch), all with 100% accuracy. Give him an all around damage boosting item, like life orb, and now he's got unmatched coverage and damage.

I have mine hold an Assault Vest instead of a Life Orb to give a boost to special defense at barely any cost to his damage output, just in case I need to soak up a bit of damage.

Arcanine @ Assault Vest
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 232 Atk / 16 Def / 16 SpD / 244 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Flare Blitz
- Extreme Speed
- Wild Charge
- Close Combat

Arcanine was supposed to be a legendary pokemon, and that's why it's stats are very thicc. It is a fully offensive pokemon, having a fire, normal, electric, and fighting type move, all of which are high powered and sure to go first because of Arcanine's great speed stat. Play it first and sweep through a few pokemon, or switch in after a pokemon faints and take over from there.

Magnezone @ Air Balloon
Ability: Magnet Pull
EVs: 128 HP / 252 SpA / 128 Spe
Modest Nature
- Magnet Rise
- Hidden Power Fire
- Flash Cannon
- Thunderbolt

Magnezone is a steel/electric type, which is pretty much the best defensive typing out there. The only things you really have to look out for is Fire, Fighting, and Ground type moves. Give it an Air Balloon and it will resist the ever hated 'Earthquake' one time. It's move-set should have high powered special attacks, to go with its high special attack stat. With a bit of luck you can throw magnezone in late-game and sweep the rest of the team by taking advantage of its high speed.

Weavile @ Razor Claw
Ability: Pickpocket
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Night Slash
- Icicle Crash
- Ice Shard
- Low Kick

Weavile is pretty darn fast, and gets powerful stab moves like Icicle Crash and Night Slash. This, accompanied by the ability Pickpocket means you will be doing big damage and removing the opponents held items. Weavile is a good matchup against teams that heavily rely on healing items like held berries, or just a good utility to have to get a quick upper-hand.

Belly Whop @ Assault Vest / Sitrus Berry
Ability: Huge Power
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Belly Drum
- Aqua Jet
- Play Rough
- Knock Off

Azumarill can have a rare ability that doubles its attack, called Huge Power. Stacking an attack-doubling move called Belly Drum on top of that...well, it's overkill. Once you are rocking attack stats of a god you can use a priority move like Aqua Jet to get a quick kill, or get a damage boosted Knock Off and kill with overwhelming damage.

Ninjask @ Leftovers
Ability: Speed Boost
EVs: 248 HP / 224 Def / 36 Spe
Impish Nature
- Baton Pass
- Substitute
- Protect
- Swords Dance

Ninjask is for baton passing and nothing else. Got an Octillary that keeps getting KOed? Baton Pass it some speed boost from Ninjask and sweep like never before. Or pop a swords dance to pass into Scrafty and get him the momentum he deserves.

Crobat (Pokémon) - Bulbapedia, the community-driven Pokémon ...

Crobat @ Choice Band
Ability: Inner Focus
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Brave Bird
- Cross Poison
- Pursuit
- U-turn

Crowbat is a very reliable flying pokemon that is easy to get, and has access to the move Fly, so you can navigate around the map world easily.

Ludicolo @ Wise Glasses / Expert Belt
Ability: Swift Swim
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Rain Dance/Synthesis/Teeter Dance
- Hydro Pump
- Giga Drain/Energy Ball
- Ice Beam

A great substitute/replacement for Octillary is this goofy looking fellow. With a significantly higher speed stat, and a respectable special attack stat, all this guy is missing is Flamethrower for maximum type coverage.

DON'T FORGET YOUR HM SLAVE
