The above unwrap was more of a learning process. The below is the finished product.
Aside from some added color, the UV's seams line up around each 'facet' of the Legoman character. Also, UV islands are stacked on top of each other. This way an artist can paint on detail quickly, and their work will be mirrored across the X axis.

Fun fact. That ‘L’ shaped shell is the blank part of the legs on the Lego Man.
When moved, the checkerboard pattern slides across the inside of the legs on the model.
