These modifiers are found, and can be changed, in the bottom right corner.

You can toggle which channels you are effecting while you paint.

Notes on the Layers Panel
The Drop Down menu in the top left corner determines what channel you are affecting when making changes to the Opacity and Blend Modes, which are the Drop Down menus found to the far right to the Name of the layer.

THE BRUSHES

Inside the Shelf, located at the bottom of the viewport, scroll down to find 'Brushes'.

Notes on the Brushes
The Bracket Keys '[' and ']' increase and decrease the size of your brush.

Also, the Panel in the bottom right will allow you access to a bunch of settings:

Flow is how much paint is coming out of the brush.
Spacing is how often paint comes out of the brush.
The Jitter Options delegate how random your brush strokes come out.
Alpha is the shape of your brush. (you can go to the shelf, and go into the Alphas menu, and double click an alpha to apply it to your brush. [These are kinda like stamps].

You can preview your brush in the black box above the scroll settings.

To save a brush you tweaked/made:

right click anywhere in the properties panel and choose 'Create Brush Preset'. It will be put into the brush shelf, and you will have to rename it.

PAINTING WITH PARTICLES
In the Shelf, go to Particles. These simulate certain effects physically, and will paint onto your model depending where you click.

That's about it.

Here's What I Made at This Stage of Things

PROTIP:

While painting on a mask, X will toggle your greyscale value between white and black.
